How Can Plasma-Rich in Growth-Factors Speed My Healing?

The use of plasma-rich in growth-factors (PRGF) during oral surgery offers many proven health benefits. The plasma is derived from a patient's blood and aids in reducing bleeding and enhancing bone and soft tissue regeneration. Dr. Rene Aviles performs the advanced treatment for patients in and around Palm City, FL. If you are planning to undergo oral surgery at Palm City Dentistry, we will explain the many benefits of this treatment option. Dr. Aviles holds numerous memberships with professional dental societies and focuses on compassionate, patient-focused care.

What Is Plasma-Rich in Growth-Factors (PRGF)?

Plasma is the largest component of our blood. Though liquid in nature, plasma contains important solid components which contain important growth hormones. Platelets play a critical role in aiding with the healing of bone and soft tissue. By concentrating important proteins that promote healing, PRGF can help the body’s tissues heal faster. Professional athletes like Rafael Nadal and Tiger Woods have used the injections to aid in recovery following injury.

What Are the Benefits of PRGF Treatments?

A growing body of research is finding that PRGF offers a range of health-related benefits. According to the National Institutes of Health, PRGF is yielding promising results as a recovery aid following oral surgical procedures, such as tooth extractions, periodontal surgery, and dental implant surgery. Patients who undergo PRGF treatment at our dental office can benefit from:

  • Improved soft tissue regeneration
  • Reduced post-surgical bleeding
  • Improved bone regeneration
  • A biocompatible treatment with minimal, if any, side effect risks
  • Zero chance of contracting a disease from PRGF treatment
  • A treatment that can be completed at our Palm City office
  • Reduced risk of post-surgical implant infections

What Should I Expect during PRGF Treatment?

Your PRGF treatment will be performed at our dental office. First, Dr. Aviles will draw blood that will be processed to produce your PRGF. Once the blood is collected, the platelets will be separated through the use of a centrifuge. The plasma with concentrated levels of growth-factors will then be separated and used as two fractions. Fraction 1 will regenerate soft tissue and Fraction 2 will regenerate bone. Once the process is complete, the PRGF solution will contain anywhere from five to 10 times the normal concentration of growth-factors helping your body heal faster and with less complications.

There are multiple potential applications of PRGF, including after a tooth extraction to aid in recovery, regenerate the bone and the soft tissue, and decrease the incidence of a dry-socket.

There are multiple potential applications of PRGF. The treatment can be used following a tooth extraction to aid in recovery. PRGF treatment is often used during bone grafting or dental implant surgery. During dental implant placement, PRGF can be used to coat the implant post before it is placed in the jaw. The use of PRGF improves the rate of healing while lowering the risk for side effects or potential complications such as infection. PRGF can also be injected into any area that is healing.
